Local schools on guard to curb hazing

Some of it seems pretty tame.
Freshmen carrying bats. Sophomores lugging water buckets. Underclassmen washing uniforms and cars of seniors.
But high school hazing has a more serious side.
Reports tell of student-athletes being mummified with Saran wrap. Tabasco sauce and Duct tape have been splashed into and stuck on eyes and mouths.
In Nevada, high school students reportedly were forced to run naked down a hill, shot with BB guns and whipped with fishing rods and belt buckles.
In Illinois, an off-campus "powder puff" football hazing ritual for juniors turned violent. Two girls reported being strangled and choked and kicked repeatedly in the head.
That's the kind of behavior that spawned laws and punishment to stop it.
Recently, it hit closer to home. This month, four members of the Coopersville High School junior varsity baseball team were expelled from school for hazing.
Allegedly, team members were violated by one or more of the four expelled students in at least 13 incidents during a 4- to 6-week period, culminating on May 18.
The four expelled students have been charged with gross indecency and are scheduled to appear for pretrial hearings in Ottawa County Juvenile Court in July.
