LUCKNOW: A first-year student of a polytechnic in Pratapgarh died of alleged poisoning early Tuesday, a few days after he told his parents about a ragging ordeal he faced at the hands of senior students. The family of Amit Tiwari, 22, who was studying mechanical engineering at the Government Polytechnic, filed a complaint with the police saying he had been killed by his seniors for going to the authorities against ragging.

Police said Amit was admitted to the civil hospital in Pratapgarh on Monday evening after he complained of vomiting and stomach pain. He was then taken to the Swaroop Rani hospital in Allahabad when his condition deteriorated, but died before being admitted there at around 2 am.

Amit's brother Arun told TOI that during his visit to his family in Unnao on October 10, Amit told him that he was being ragged by his seniors. "He said the juniors were made to strip in front of others and were beaten up when they resisted," Arun said. Polytechnic officials, however, denied that the death was linked to ragging.

Medical student ends life due to ragging

A first-year student of Mysore Medical College committed suicide on Thursday allegedly due to ragging, police said.

Chetan Raj, 18, was allegedly subjected to ragging by senior students and he took the extreme step by hanging himself from the ceiling of his lodge room.

Raj, son of a BSNL employee in Shimoga, joined the college on September 10 and was staying in college hostel.

According to his parents, Chetan had returned to Shimoga on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi festival on September 15.

He complained that he was being subjected to ragging. His father decided to get him a paying guest accommodation in Mysore.

Accordingly, he vacated the college hostel and checked into a lodge on September 16, pending his accommodation as a paying guest. His body was found hanging from the roof of his lodge room on Thursday.

Police have registered a case and are investigating. Hostel wardens said they were also inquiring into circumstances leading to Chetan's suicide.

Sep 20: What an irony that one student has not yet recovered from the trauma of ragging that we hear another student ending his life due to the erosion of self-confidence consequent of ragging by seniors.

A private college student committed suicide after he could not tolerate the alleged inhuman ragging by the seniors told the police. Durgesh Shukla, MCA first year student in the Pioneer College left a suicide note which said that he was not happy with the ragging incident of his seniors and lost confidence before ending his life.

Shukla, a resident of Khandwa was found hanging with a ceiling fan in the rented house in Chanakya Complex near Malwa Mill. The incident sent shock waves throughout the city.

Police has registered a case against unidentified students for compelling him to take such extreme measures. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the suicide by the student.

As the incident reached the ears of students they got agitated. ABVP students demonstrated before the Pioneer College and also forced the other colleges private as well as government to be closed as a protest against the shocking incident. They demanded the authority of the college to take serious action against who are found guilty. ABVP also blamed the college authority that they are trying to defend the culprits and not taking action.

While on the other hand college authority has denied any incident of ragging and also claimed that the college has an anti-ragging committee. Investigation is pending but the whole incident raises the question why does law fail to deter the criminals? In spite of Supreme Court ruling and defining “ragging’ a disorderly conduct how students dare taking law in their hands?

Students may get public caning

Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia announced on Monday it is considering re-introducing the previously banned act of public caning in schools as a deterrent to undisciplined students, an official news report said.
Currently, school principals are allowed to cane trouble-making students but only in a private room with another teacher present as a witness, Deputy Education Minister Noh Omar said.

"We need to discuss the matter and take into consideration that public caning was introduced in 1959," Noh was quoted by the Bernama news agency as saying in parliament on Monday.

The government banned public caning in 2004 but allowed school headmasters to cane students in their rooms with a witness.

Noh was responding to calls by teachers and parents for the government to enforce stricter rules to control undisciplined students, especially those found to have a history of violence and bullying.

One local lawmaker recently suggested that public caning would be effective in stopping students from creating serious disciplinary problems as their image would be tarnished in front of other students.

Noh said the government would consider all other options before deciding on whether to reverse the ban on public caning.

"All principals of fully residential schools will be given courses to remind them of the dangers of ragging or 'orientation,'" he said.

"We will also invite the police to give talks to the senior students on the matter before the new school term begins."


Recently, several cases of bullying by older students have been highlighted in the local media with many of the young victims suffering from serious injuries and sometimes even death. - Sapa-DPA
