[ The Hindu ] Panel to probe ragging at Cusat

KOCHI: A Syndicate meeting of the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) here on Thursday decided to appoint a sub-committee to investigate the ragging case reported from a campus hostel recently.

The sub-committee will submit its report within a week. P.S. Sreejith, Principal of the School of Engineering, will be its secretary.

Syndicate members voiced their protest against the increasing number of ragging cases on the campus.

The Syndicate was divided on starting a new investigation, with the Registrar and the Pro Vice-Chancellor saying that the university authorities had completed a preliminary inquiry. They highlighted the suspension of 21 ragging accused.

Differences cropped up when the university authorities refused to include ragging on the agenda for the meeting. But the Syndicate members owing allegiance to the Left parties opposed the move and demanded an immediate discussion.

The Syndicate urged Vice-Chancellor in-charge and Higher Education Secretary T.K. Jose to ratify the suspension of Registrar A. Ramachandran. The Registrar was suspended on allegations that he had denied benefits to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students during this year’s admission process. Mr. Ramachandran had denied the allegation.

Kochi, Sept. 14 (PTI): The Kerala High Court on Thursday stayed for three weeks the trial of the SME Nursing college ragging case, which was to commence on September 15.

The order in this regard was issued by Justice V Ramkumar while considering a writ petition filed by state government against the discharge order of sessions court, Kottayam in favour of the SME College principal, Mariyamma and Director P Muralidharan Nair, eight and seventh accused respectively in the case.

The case relates to the alleged molestation of a girl student in the name of ragging by seniors.

The sessions court had found that offence under prohibition of ragging act cannot be charged against the two accused and had discharged them. Challenging this, the government filed a revision petition.

The court also stayed for three weeks the trial of the case relating to the ragging of a nursing student at the School of Medical Education Nursing College in Kottayam. The trial is scheduled for September 15.

The court passed the order on a revision petition filed by the State Government against the Kottayam Sessions Court’s order discharging SME College Principal Mariyamma and Director P. Muralidharan Nair, eight and seventh accused respectively from the offences under the Prohibition of Ragging Act.

SFI workers smash down computers [NewIndiapress.com]

KOZHIKODE: A group of SFI activists on Tuesday attacked the office of Veda Vyasa Trust and its industrial training institute at Chalappuram in the city.

According to police the provocation for the attack is suspected to be the suspension of four students from the engineering college run by the trust at Vazhayoor in Malappuram district.

Students were suspended in January, but SFI took up the cudgels for them.

The student outfit has been demanding that the college management should revoke the suspension of the ragging accused.

However, the management did not budge. Assailants have smashed down 25 computers, window panes, furniture at the training institute, Calicut Institute of Engineering and Technology.

They stormed into the institute, after breaking police ribbon.

Five policemen, students and teachers of the institute sustained minor injuries in heavy stone pelting by SFI activists.

Kasaba police have registered a case.
