Eighteen-year-old Alakeshwar Mishra, a native of Kanpur who had joined the Moti Lal Nehru National Institute of Technology here, was found dead inside his hostel room on Wednesday.
Police had stated that it appeared to be a case of suicide even though it did not rule out “twists in the tale” as the room was locked from outside and the keys were found from the pocket of the student.
However, with the post mortem report saying his death resulted from strangulation, police suspect he might have been murdered and the killers hung his body from the ceiling and locked the door with the help of a duplicate key, putting the original inside the pocket of the deceased to confuse the investigators. While police have interrogated Mishra’s two room-mates, who have claimed that they were in the classroom when the incident happened, no vital clue has emerged so far.
Meanwhile, the incident has triggered a shock wave in the Moti Lal Nehru National Institute of Technology campus, with the authorities having formed a five-member committee to investigate the incident and also put stringent curbs on ragging, which was initially believed to be the cause behind the alleged suicide. -- PTI
