AASU forms cells to curb ragging

GUWAHATI, July 17 – Taking a firm stand against ragging in colleges and hostels, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) today formed an anti-ragging cell for monitoring the unsavoury situations and harassments that newcomers are made to face in the name of ragging. Any victim of ragging will be able to lodge a complaint before the cell.

“Ragging is against the norms of any civilized society, and must be totally eradicated. Inflicting mental and physical torture on the newcomers betrays a diseased mind, and cannot be accepted under any circumstances,” the AASU said in a statement.

Pointing out that even the Supreme Court of India had to intervene in the matter due to wide prevalence of ragging, the AASU said that it appealed to the heads of all educational institutions to take strict measures to curb the menace. “The AASU will extend full support to institutions that take strict action on those guilty of ragging,” it said. The AASU will soon convene a meeting of union bodies of all colleges and other educational institutions of the city and chalk out a plan of action for eradicating the evil. “Ragging has even forced many students to lose valuable academic years, and in extreme cases there have been instances of suicide.

Urging the newcomers to contact the cells without hesitation over any incident of ragging, the AASU said that it had instructed all its units to be on guard against ragging.

Hailing the recent steps initiated by the Dibrugarh University authorities to check ragging, the AASU said that other institutions would do well to emulate the exercise.
