Panjab University gears up for student council polls

Chandigarh, July 24: The student’s council elections at Panjab University and colleges may be scheduled for September, but all the parties have started gearing up for the day. While students wearing badges of different parties are seen in different colleges, welcoming the freshers is on in the varsity. President of Students Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU) Harpreet Singh Multani says that the seniors are welcoming the freshers by visiting classes. “The hectic activity would start once the date of elections is announced. As of now we are holding meetings to plan activities and also going to different hostels to meet the students,” he says.

The Indian National Students Organisation (INSO) has also formed an anti-ragging squad. President of the Chandigarh unit of the party Vikas Rathee says, “The students of University Institute of Engineering and Technology face the problem of ragging. Our squad would keep a check that no freshers are harassed. Teams of five students each have been deployed in the hostels also. Our helpline numbers have been advertised so that it is easier for the students to contact.”

In a bid to woo freshers, different parties helped students with the admission formalities. From filling forms to deposition of fees, students were helped in every way. At Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26 the Chandigarh Students Union and Khalsa College Students Union had distributed pamphlets with their numbers when admission forms were being sold. They then answered queries of the parents and students.
