Ragging fracas: Six-member panel set up - The Statesman

Statesman News Service BANKURA, May 25: The Mallabhum Institute of Technology in Bishnupur yesterday set up a six-member anti-ragging committee, headed by Mr Dilip Chakraborty, a lecturer with the institution, amid protests by the students’ union which claimed charges of ragging brought against some senior students by a first-year student, Soumya Roy, were fabricated. Family members of Soumya have already lodged an FIR with the Bishnupur PS and has sought the SDO’s intervention into the matter.

Soumya, a first-year student, was allegedly ragged by some senior students. The victim’s father, a businessman of New Barrackpore, reached the college last morning. Mr Roy alleged that a section of senior students had compelled his son to inhale marijuana, brown sugar and hashish for four days beginning 19 May. Police interrogated the senior students accused in the case last evening. The investigating officer of the Bishnupur PS, Mr Bamapada Mukherjee, said: “We have not found any specific evidence which proves that the boy was compelled. Some boys, however, confessed to the habit of drinking and smoking ganja.”
