Immediately after the news reached us, we had contacted family members of Soumya Roy, a victim of alleged ragging in Bishnupur, West Bengal.
After fixing up an appointment with them a 3 member team from our West Bengal unit visited them at their relative's house near Kolkata. They informed us that they are receiving phones from Soumya's friends that his friends at the hostel are being threatened to speak against the victim.
Soumya's exams has been commenced with the viva-voce, but he is in no condition to appear in the examination. They also informed that they have been sent an SMS by the college authority to produce him before the anti-ragging committee of the college.
Our team was told that in reality there is no fixed anti ragging committee in the college and one is only set up when a complain is lodged (usually juniors are threatened not to lodge one) . We were informed by them that freshers are totally frustrated with the role of these anti-ragging commitees, set up by their colleege authority.
Our team assured them with maximum possible support to their struggle. Members also provided them with some necessary information and tried to console the victim. They also tried to encourage him so that he may try not to lose a year. Everyone felt the need to approach the West Bengal University of Technology for their kind intervention. The No Ragging Foundation is ready to request the university for kindly arranging alternative examination for the victim, besides that by the family, if it is contacted for this by his guardians.
