[Herald] Govt bids to curb ragging

PANJIM, SEPT 13 — In a major decision, the State Cabinet on Thursday approved the Goa Prohibition of Ragging Bill 2007 in a bid to curb ragging within and outside educational institutions.

At a post-Cabinet briefing, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat disclosed that former Pernem MLA Jitendra Deshprabhu introduced the Bill as a Private Member’s Bill in 2006.

“The Bill will be examined,” Kamat said, as indications are that the Bill will be enacted shortly to counter the social evil haunting educational institutions.

The Bill expresses concern for the safety of students against ragging and also proposes stern action against the participants and its abetters.

Herald understands that the Bill proposes punishment in the event of conviction for disciplinary action by the head of the institution.

The punishment includes withholding scholarships, results and debars the guilty from representing and participating in events. It also proposes suspension or expulsion from the institution and hostel.
