University constitutes panel to check ragging


Chandigarh, July 19: Panjab University has constituted a number of Central Monitoring committees to curb ragging on the PU campus.
The Dean Students Welfare, Prof Naval Kishore said that five committees have already been constituted. “Each committee will have four members. The committee members will conduct rounds of different department blocks and the canteens to prevent any ragging incident,” He added.

The committees were formed after a emergency meeting was after complaints of ragging in the campus was received by the authorities.
The security arrangement in the university premises has been beefed up and security personnel have been asked to be vigilant and prevent any untoward incident. Sub committees to check ragging in the campus had been constituted by the PU officials.
Hostel wardens have been instructed to stay in the hostels till 11 pm to prevent incidents of ragging.
Security arrangements have been tightened in hostels, housing first year students. Two senior students will be deputed in all the hostels to prevent any untoward incident.
The students involved in ragging will be severely punished.The university has forwarded the Supreme Court directive on ragging to all the affiliated colleges. The directive states that the students involved in ragging could face possible expulsion from the institute.
The students can also be barred from admission to other institutes in the country.
College authorities have said that these directives will be followed by PU in dealing with ragging cases.

New students in several colleges spent their first night in the hostel and their teachers were present to keep an eye on the goings-on.

Colleges like Kirorimal and Hans Raj do not believe in taking chances and have put first-year students in a separate wing. "All the first-year students are in a separate wing and guards deployed at the gate. No senior student can enter after 9 pm without written permission of the warden. They also have to make an entry at the gate," said SR Arora, Principal, Hans Raj College.

Some colleges like Ramjas even went ahead and hired private security for the men's and women's hostels. And being a male student will not help bend the rules. The new norm is that even men cannot enter the hostel after 8 pm without prior permission, nor can outsiders.

"No guests are going to be allowed in the hostel for the first three months. The women's hostel is already open, but the men's hostel will open from July 20," said Rajendra Prasad, Principal, Ramjas College. Prasad said private security was hired because they were not pressured easily.

The freshers at Miranda House had dinner with their principal and other faculty members on Monday night. "The first-year students landed on Sunday night. The hostel committee members had dinner with them. This helps us develop an informal camaraderie between students and teachers," said Pratibha Jolly, Principal, Miranda House.

Miranda House is adopting a subtler approach, planning interactive sessions that will be more about laughing, singing, dancing — basically showcasing ones talent minus the element of bullying. "This will continue for the initial period. Although ragging is not an issue in Miranda House, we are not taking any chances," said Jolly.

At Lady Shri Ram College, the boarders were given a formal orientation by the college authorities on July 15. Director Residency K Kanthan said: "While the students would have all the liberty and could do things they wanted, they were under no compulsion to obey the seniors."

One unanimous verdict was on the mess food by the group of freshers. "We are all simply loving it. Coming from Tamil Nadu, I was sure to have problems, but surprisingly, I haven't skipped any meals," said Alamu, a student of Political Science. She has also been sharing stories from the Rajnikanth-starrer film Shivaji with her roommate Sapna Goyal who does not understand Tamil.

While there was no instance of ragging, thanks to the Supreme Court ruling, the seniors reportedly pampered the students to the hilt. "They have been calling us to their rooms and giving us chocolates and other tasty nick-nacks," said Dilpreet Sandhu from BA Programme.

Scary Stories’ about Middle School Should be Taken Seriously

Newswise — For a lot of new middle school students, word of mouth trumps school tours and brochures.

“One source of anxiety that arises during a child’s transition to middle school is the ‘scary stories’ passed down by older siblings, peers and even adults about what to expect at the new school,” said Elizabeth Woodruff, clinical instructor of kinesiology at The University of Alabama.

Woodruff said general topics often found in these “scary stories” include bullying by older students, the intimidating size of the new school building and campus, unreasonably high academic expectations, harsh discipline administered by faculty and administrators, violence, sexual harassment and drugs.

She said one; however, stands out above the rest: gym class.

“Communal showers and locker rooms bring to the forefront students’ feelings of inadequacy about their bodies. Hazing and team initiations add to students’ concerns as they struggle to find their place in the secondary school setting. Students’ fears, whether founded in fact or not, may preclude their willing participation in school activities and, particularly, in physical education and sports,” said Woodruff.

Woodruff stresses these “stories” should be taken seriously by both parents and school officials when dealing with the transition process.

“This knowledge should be utilized in designing organized transitional programs in which both parents and students participate in order to be informed and prepared for this important event in a student’s life.”

New Delhi: With the start of the fresh term in Delhi University, ragging may be something that may not be witnessed, like it is every year.
Ragging means a visit to Tihar Jail- a tad extreme it may be but it has definitely driven home the message.
The warnings are everywhere in the first day of college. It is in the entrance, in the corridors and even outside toilets.
Says a senior student, Nazar Shah, “Even if we talk to the talk to the juniors. We are hauled up for ragging in the hostel. We are woken up in the middle of the night and given warnings.”
The new laws applicable from this year have made ragging a criminal offence. In fact if college authorities fail to report a serious complaint to the police then they will be considered culpable of the crime as well.
So while the colleges are being extra cautious the new recruits are taking a more tolerant view of the subject.
“I am not really scared. I am looking forward to it especially if it is done in limits,” says a Ist year student, Shreyas Thakur.
“We want our first day in college to be memorable with good memories, “ adds another Ist year student, Preeti Seth.
The odd singing and dancing apart it was a fairly quiet day one for DU, boring some would say but better boring than behind bars.

Sonora, CA -- All seven individuals charged with a combination of battery and hazing in the Columbia College firefighter January party incident have been cited and released by the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Department.

According to Lt. Dan Bressler Aaron Keith Means and Michael Anthony Hall Sacheli were cited and released Friday.

Arraignment in Tuolumne County Superior Court has been scheduled by the District Attorney's office for the first week of August.

This may be the first case of ragging in the Capital to be reported to the police after the Supreme Court declared it a cognisable offence. The principal of Hindu College has filed a police complaint against a student set to graduate this year for ragging a first-year BSC Applied Physical Science student. The victim has alleged, in his complaint, that he was forced to dance and the perpetrators abused him when he refused.

"We have lodged a police complaint against a student from Haryana who finished his course this year. We have also banned his entry into the college. We have also summoned the father of another student from Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir," said Hindu College Principal Kavita Sharma.

"We did not lodge a first information report (FIR) as we had not received a complaint. The victim submitted the written complaint in the evening. We may lodge an FIR on Wednesday."

The college authorities will meet on Wednesday morning to discuss the issue and meet the parents of the errant students. A third student has also been named in the complaint. According to Sharma, some faculty members who were taking a round of the canteen in the morning found a group of boys ragging a first-year student.

"They immediately intervened. When I asked the perpetrators which year they were in, one of them said he had finished his BA Programme course from the college and had come to collect his result. He also said that he was only interacting with the student. Results for the course are not out yet and he had no business to be in college. The word interaction cannot be allowed to be turned into a euphemism for ragging," said Sharma.

The college has also issued a letter to the second guilty student and has asked him to call his parents, failing which an FIR would be registered against him.

BANGALORE: The ragging menace resurfaced dramatically at a private nursing school in Ramanagaram with a first year General Nursing and Midwifery student attempting suicide after he was allegedly ragged, beaten up and humiliated last Tuesday. Eventually, it was a providential escape from death for the hapless student. Shattered both mentally and physically, the victim is now ready to say goodbye to the school but not before putting the people behind his ordeal in the dock.
The victim, Byju C., had, on Tuesday, cut his wrists with a blade to escape further humiliation. Fortunately, he was spotted in time by some friends who rushed him to a private hospital at Rajarajeswarinagar in Bangalore. He was later referred to Manipal Hospital. He battled for life in the ICU and was discharged only on Saturday.
Biju’s nightmare began the day before his attempted suicide. A senior student, apparently quite influential with the school management, summoned Byju to his hostel room and ordered him to get a bottle of wine. “I was taking bath when a student told me about my senior’s demand. I went about 10 minutes later and was thoroughly beaten up for being late,” Byju recalled to The Hindu.
Complaint
Traumatised, Byju rang up his father, Chellappan in Pattanamthitta district of Kerala, who advised him to tell everything to S.R. Bowin, principal of the M.H. Nursing School.
The next morning, Byju approached the school head and gave her a written complaint. But by then, the senior student who ragged him had drafted another letter foisting charges against Byju and handed it over to the school head. The principal chose to read aloud this letter, even as Byju’s father reached the place.
A shocked Byju watched in disbelief as the principal accused him of theft and misbehaviour with girl students. “I told the principal that even in my dreams I wouldn’t think of doing such things,” said Byju. But his father had to apologise to the principal assuring that his son would not repeat the misdeeds. “I was also forced to say sorry for a mistake I never committed,” he said.
Thoroughly shaken by the turn of events, Byju chose to end his life. After his father left for Kerala, he went to a coconut grove behind the women’s hostel and slashed his left wrist. However, when he received a phone call from his hostel-mates, he told about his attempted suicide. Within minutes, his friends found him semi-conscious in the grove and rushed him to the hospital.
Ms. Bowin denied any incident of ragging in her institution. “If he (Byju) had given a complaint about ragging, I would have taken action. But no such complaint came to me. There was a clash between juniors and seniors, which went on to an argument. As far as my knowledge goes, it is not ragging. Students give so many complaints. But you cannot blindly believe them,” she said.
The accused 3rd year student, it is learnt, was also working as an admission agent for the nursing school, bringing students from Kerala.
Byju’s parents and relatives on Sunday drafted a complaint to the Director General of Police and the Bangalore District Police Superintendent. The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) said it will submit a memorandum to the police.

CARBONDALE - Three suspended Southern Illinois University Carbondale students are suing the university and five of its employees for racial discrimination stemming from an alleged 2004 sorority hazing incident.

Monet Williams, Tequeira Johnson and Nakia Collins - members of the historically black Zeta Phi Beta sorority - claim the university disciplined them differently because they were black. The university, however, contends that no racial discrimination took place and referred to incidents where both black and white students in SIUC's Greek system were suspended.
The civil case was filed in 2005 and is before the U.S. Federal Court for the Southern District of Illinois in Benton. Richard Fedder, the Carbondale attorney representing the three women, said the trial date was postponed Thursday until the week of Sept. 17.

The claim stems from an alleged hazing that took place from Oct. 3 to Oct. 7, 2004. About a month later, SIUC student Chantal Conley filed a report with the university police department, claiming she was hazed and hit by a wooden paddle during Zeta's initiation process.

Because Conley specifically named students, the report was forwarded to the university's Student Judicial Affairs office, which is responsible for disciplining students for Student Conduct Code violations, one of which is hazing.

The sorority member who allegedly paddled Conley was found not guilty by Student Judicial Affairs. But Williams, Johnson and Collins were found guilty of hazing and suspended for three years. On appeal, Williams' suspension was reduced to two years.

The university, which is represented by Chicago lawyers Donyelle Gray and Ellen Douglass, filed a motion for summary judgment in May. If the judge approves the motion, he would make the final decision rather than a jury.

In its motion, the university claims the three suspended students have not met the burden of proving they were treated differently or that the university "acted with discriminatory intent."

In Fedder's reply, he specifically cited the permanent ban of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity after the April 4, 2004, drowning of a pledge.

The university's Student Development Office, which enforces rules regarding fraternities and sororities, banned the predominately white fraternity after finding the Pikes guilty of violating eight rules regarding alcohol, hazing and risk management at fraternity events.

Fedder argues that in the Pikes case, punishment was given to the entire fraternity, not individual members like this case. The university, however, stated that Student Judicial Affairs only has jurisdiction over students, not student organizations.

The first week of this academic session may not witness ragging that takes place on most Delhi University college campuses every year. DU colleges this time are serious about preventing ragging, in the light of Supreme Court directions to register FIRs, or first information reports, in such cases.

Several colleges have highlighted their zero-tolerance policy for ragging in their admission prospectus and websites — unwilling to leave any scope for lack of awareness.

Colleges like Indraprastha, Miranda and Ramjas clearly mention in their respective college prospectuses that ragging is a criminal offence and will not be tolerated. “We have not just carried a banner slogan in our prospectus against ragging, but also a poster on the last page. There is no space for any kind of ragging — light or otherwise in Ramjas,” said Rajendra Prasad, principal, Ramjas College.

Miranda House principal Pratibha Jolly said although ragging was never a big issue in the college, preventive measures were in place. “We will be extra vigilant in the light of the SC directives. We have publicised the SC order in our prospectus and handbook. We will also hold a poster competition on ragging once the college reopens,” she said.

“Our proctorial committee has been very active for the last three-four years. In fact, we start our anti-ragging checks right from the day the first cut-off list is declared. Once session starts, the squads comprising students and faculty fan out all over the campus, especially in vulnerable areas like toilets, canteen, the gymnasium, auditorium and pool,” said Manasvini Yogi, Indraprastha media co-ordinator.

Delhi University is leaving no stone unturned in its efforts to curb incidents of ragging with the new academic session all set to commence on July 16. University authorities are hopeful that no untoward incidents take place this year.

Delhi University Proctor, Prof Gurmeet Singh, said, “We have issued instructions to all heads of institutions that fall under DU that they should identify a Disciplinary Resource Person (DRP) and intimate the DRP’s name, address and telephone numbers to the proctor’s office immediately. The DRPs will directly liaise with the proctor at the university level.”

Scott Bush's attorney, Joe Legatz, indicated to prosecutors Thursday he would schedule a plea date.

Bush, 15, and co-defendants Rob Miller, Xian Schaeffer and Josh Schoenborn, all are charged with gross indecency in 13 incidents over a four- to six-week period.

Sonora, CA -- Add Matthew Anthony Rossi to the list of those who have been served a warrant, cited and released in the Columbia College hazing incident.
According to Lt. Dan Bressler of the Sheriff's Department, Rossi, 21 year old Christopher Ingram and 22 year old Brian Cole constitute three of the four individuals who have been charged with one count of hazing and one count of unlawful use of force and violence who have now been cited and released on the misdemeanor charges. Aaron Means remains the only one, charged on the two counts, that has yet to be cited.
21 year old Timothy O'Neill, charged with a single count of hazing, turned himself into authorities. He was cited and released. Michael Sacheli and Cary Gregg have also been charged with a single count of hazing. They have yet to be cited.
All seven were involved with the hazing of 19 year old Andrew Grafius during a student-firefighter party in the Crystal Falls area in January. Grafius has since withdrawn from the Columbia College program.

Kolkata, July 12: No one has been arrested so far in connection with the alleged ragging of Ashumendra Pratap Singh, a first-year student at the Indian Institute of Hotel Management on June 24. Singh’s mates Amit, Rahul, Saurav Singh, Apurba Chowdhury, Shahbaz Afreen, Mathew and Biswajit who have been accused of beating him up and forcing him to consume alcohol on that day have also gone out of station without intimating police.
“They have gone to their respective homes as their classes are now suspended. They will be back on Monday,” said Soumitra Bose, the coordinator of the institute. He said that after Singh was taken away to Kanpur by his family members, police never came to the institute. They also did not have any idea about the FIR lodged by the members of Singh’s family. SDPO Bidhannagar Prasun Banerjee today said: “Our investigations are on. So far we did not find any evidence to establish these students’ involvement. We are yet to determine whether it was a case of ragging.” He said that no one would be arrested unless the allegations are proved. A senior police official of Bidhannagar North police station said that the family members also did not communicate with police after taking Singh away from here.

Sonora, CA -- Three of the seven individuals charged by the District Attorney's office in that January hazing case have been cited and released by the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Department.

According to Lt. Dan Bressler, 21 year old Christopher Ingram and 22 year old Brian Cole have been cited and released. Ingram was picked up at the campus fire station while Cole was located at his home. Both have been charged with one count of hazing and one count of unlawful use of force and violence.

Ramjas to appoint lecturers in hostel to prevent ragging

New Delhi: To check the incidents of ragging by seniors, Ramjas College has made various arrangements for the newcomers this year. The college will appoint two young lecturers who will share the floor with senior residents in the hostel.

''For the first three months of the academic session, two young bachelor lecturers will be appointed in the hostel to ensure that no fresher is ragged,'' said college Principal Rajendra Prasad.

Mr. Prasad also added: ''we will choose the youngest two among the faculty members so that they can identify with the campus life. They will speak to the freshers and seniors and will know about their problems. These two lecturers will build a communication bridge between students and the administration.''

Among the other arrangements, the college has opened six helplines for the newcomers, which will be attended by six important functionaries of the college, including Mr. Prasad himself.
'Freshers can call at any of these six numbers - 9311031121 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6, and can reach all six of us for any help," Prasad said while discussing about these special arrangements.
The college will also organize special orientation and cultural programs for the new
students .

New Delhi: To check the incidents of ragging by seniors, Ramjas College has made various arrangements for the newcomers this year. The college will appoint two young lecturers who will share the floor with senior residents in the hostel.

''For the first three months of the academic session, two young bachelor lecturers will be appointed in the hostel to ensure that no fresher is ragged,'' said college Principal Rajendra Prasad.

Mr. Prasad also added: ''we will choose the youngest two among the faculty members so that they can identify with the campus life. They will speak to the freshers and seniors and will know about their problems. These two lecturers will build a communication bridge between students and the administration.''

Among the other arrangements, the college has opened six helplines for the newcomers, which will be attended by six important functionaries of the college, including Mr. Prasad himself.
'Freshers can call at any of these six numbers - 9311031121 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6, and can reach all six of us for any help," Prasad said while discussing about these special arrangements.
The college will also organize special orientation and cultural programs for the new
students .

New Delhi, July 08: As Part of Delhi University Students Union’s Anti Ragging Squad’s effort to check incidents of ragging, victim students can instantly register their complaint at the area SHO or to the area ACP. Narendra Tokas, All India chairman of the National Students’ Union of India, said, “ This step has been taken to protect the peaceful environment in the campus so that the students can easily adjust themselves and incidents like suicides do not occur”. Students, too, expressed satisfaction about the move. “DUSU has taken a good step by providing helpline numbers of the officials too,” said Nasser, an engineering aspirant at IP College. Apoorva, a BSc Life Science student at KMC College said, “These measures would definitely help in checking rising number of ragging incidents which take place across the campus.” “Action would only be taken against serious kind of ragging and that too only after a complaint of that type has been filed by the sufferer,” said Tokas. The accused may face an imprisonment of 2-3 years (in case of outsiders) or may get rusticated from the college (in case of insider). “No such incident of ragging or suicides were reported in DU last year due which automatically makes the need for the revival of such stringent decisions in this session as well,” said Mr. Gurmeet Singh Proctor, Delhi University.

Doctors at the Chandrakanta Nursing Home at Civil Lines, where he is admitted, say the head injuries have left him mentally disturbed. He was injured, disoriented and had apparently been there since the incident, asking for help. No one had come to his aid. Vijayawada, July 06: The Andhra Pradesh Legal Services Authority is ready to help people, who are facing threats from financial institutions in respect of repayment of loans and also first year students in various educational institutions who may be facing harassment in the hands of their seniors in the name of ragging.
Metropolitan Sessions Judge D. Isac Prabhakar said at a press conference on Thursday that those who required legal help free of cost could lodge just an oral complaint on telephone. Guidance and legal aid could be obtained from the District Legal Services Authority in Machilipatnam and the Mandal Legal Services Committee located on the City Civil Courts premises. The district secretary of the Legal Services Authority could be contacted on phone number 94409-01051. Referring to cases of ragging, Mr. Prabhakar said that it was the responsibility of the principals of colleges and wardens of hostels to ensure discipline among students. “Victims of ragging can call us to get instant help,” the judge said.

Colleges open amid conviction of three students for ragging

It’s that time of the year when professional colleges open after vacation and along with that comes the menace of ragging. While laws have been enacted to make ragging a punishable offence, few get convicted because the authorities as well as the community still take lenient view of the problem.
However, this time before colleges open, a stern message has been sent across to perpetrators of ragging in Andhra Pradesh. A court in Kurnool, the former capital of Andhra Pradesh,have sentenced three students of Kurnool Medical College for ragging their juniors.
Principal junior civil judge V Krishna Murthy on Wednesday sentenced N Srinivas, CP Muralikrishna Reddy and A Sudhir Kumar Reddy, the three senior students to undergo jail-term for a year and pay a fine of Rs 5,000 each. They had summoned three first year students to their hostel room on August 30 last year and made them to strip, in the name of ragging. Later they took the pictures of the stripped students using their cell phone cameras. This is the first case of conviction in a ragging case in the state.

Warrants issued in Ellsinore hazing incident

BATESVILLE, Ark. - Warrants have been issued for three 17-year-old boys from Carter County.
According to the Independence County Sheriff Department, the hazing occured at Lyon College in Batesville, Arkansas during a basketball camp.
Several 13 and 14-year-old say they were told they would have to go through a hazing in order to get on the basketball team.
All the victims and suspects were at the camp and from the East Cart School District. The sheriff department also said some of the events were captured on video by a cell phone.
Formal charges are expected to be filed sometime this week. The three 17-year-olds will face charges in Independence County Juvenile court.

Anti-ragging activists chose the venue of a counselling session on Sunday to campaign against the campus menace.



Around 20 members of No Ragging Foundation gathered at Sarat Sadan, Howrah, where a counselling session was under way for allotment of seats among students who have cracked the All India Engineering Entrance Examination.

Forum members — students of engineering and medical colleges and pass-outs — explained to the candidates and their parents the steps to tackle ragging.

The coordinator of the forum, Kushal Banerjee, a junior doctor at Sambhunath Pandit Hospital, said: “A student who has been subjected to physical or mental torture in the name of ragging can contact us on www.no2ragging.com. We will soon start counselling sessions for victims of ragging and arrange for their treatment.”

While parents were seen talking enthusiastically with forum members, some of the candidates expressed the fear that they might get marked by seniors.

The candidates wanted to know whether the forum members would be by their side if they are ragged badly and how to approach the forum during an emergency.

“It’s time the parents are united against torture in the name of ragging,” said Amit Ghosh, from Nagerbazar, the father of a candidate. Saikat Roy, an electronic engineer who accompanied his sister to the counselling, said: “Those who inflict torture on juniors should be treated on a par with criminals.”

Srijani Mitra, an activist of the forum that has over 300 members, said more than 1,000 parents collected leaflets detailing ways to fight ragging.

The trial of 14 trainee pilots from the Air Force Training College here who were charged with causing hurt to a junior early this year will begin on Aug 22.

Magistrate Nabishah Ibrahim fixed two days for hearing when the case was re-mentioned yesterday.The 14 seniors — all final year students of a three-year diploma-level course in aeronautical engineering — had pleaded not guilty when they were charged on March 24 with causing hurt to Muhammad Hazim Ahmad Azman.

All the accused, aged between 19 and 22, were alleged to have committed the offence at the back of Blok Kenyalang, Wisma Pegawai Kadet in Kem Tanah Merah near here, between 9am and 11am on Jan 27.

The trainee pilots are Azharul Abdullah, Ahmad Hafiz Sulaiman, Thana a/l Achuan, Wan Aiman Hazimin Wan Baharuddin, Mohd Hishamuddin Mohd Suhaimee, Umar Anas Abd Halim, Mohd Izhwan Zulkapli, Mohd Sofian Mamat, Muhamad Ezuan Ahmad Moxni, Mohd Rizuan Jamaluddin, Mohd Zhafri Hanafi, Mohamad Yusof, Mohd Fauzi Ishak and Abdullah Arobi Mohd Rosli.

They are still attending lessons at the college.

Sri Lanka may be the only country where ragging is used to murder people, particularly University students and school children. In addition to murder there have been a large number of cases of causing deformities, torture, trauma and untold pain of mind.This wickedness, inhuman behaviour and villainy, resorted to by some psychologically deranged University students, has now spread to schools, armed forces, training colleges, technical institutions, religious institutions and generally everywhere in Sri Lanka. Not only young men and women but even some clergy, unfortunately, resort to this 'crime'. Ragging started years ago, as a jolly good way of freshers and seniors coming to know each other where both parties enjoyed the fun.This came to Sri Lanka from England. In the Sinhala and Tamil traditional educational system there was nothing other than mutual concern, respect and kindness between the novice, the veterans and the teachers. Today the name ragging is used for a bastardly system of abuse and torture.Not all seniors at the University do go out for ragging and some are positively against this mean practice. The compulsive "raggers" are definitely mentally deranged, dangerous "criminals in students' clothing" and they rag for following reasons.1. Subconsious desire to murder: Many consider the newcomers as potential competitiors in the job market and they have a latent desire to kill them and this desire results in causing potentially fatal harm.2. Sexual satisfaction: Some derive sadistic sexual pleasure out of making freshers undress and perform unnatural sex acts and seeing them cry, writhe and shiver with fear and pain. There has been instances of suicide of innocent students after getting sexually abused.3. Inferiority complex: There are mad students who have a low opinion of themselves due to physical unattractiveness, lack of wealth and or lack of knowledge of etiquette and other things necessary to be members of the society that they want to get into. These people are in a state of fury against the human race and are dangerously anti-social. They will kill, maim or torture anybody to derive some satisfaction of being able to exercise power.4. To force freshers to join their cliques through fear: These gangs torture newcomers to subdue them and force them to join their cliques as "slaves." This is the method used by terrorists, underworld gangsters and madmen like Idi Amin.5. To take revenge for the torture they had suffered from their seniors.6. To extort money and to force victims to provide other favours.As a result of this inhuman torture system some have died, some have got crippled and many have got sexually impotent. The vast majority of the victims have got permanent psychological scars and some of them, in turn, become criminal "raggers" who get some consolation by inflicting pain on their innocent juniors. In fact, this is a national disaster, an epidemic, a criminal waste of resources, life and a major cause of deterioration of the values and peace in this lovely land.The philosophy behind criminal ragging is "Might is Right" i.e., the stronger have a right to abuse the weaker. This is the basis of imperialism and slavery. When this kind of thinking is inculcated in people, they tend to use it wherever they go, for example, as teachers, government servants or professionals.Signs of this can be seen at many places where some graduates work, though the majority do not suffer from the shock that long. Now is the time to free the country from this menace.The people who must lead this good work are none other than the present seniors in the Universities. All those who are against this dastardly crime that goes under the misnomer "ragging" - religious bodies, humanitarian organisations, political parties and decent individuals should get together and stand up NOW, before more torture and murder will take place with the new batches of innocent students getting into the Universities this year.We must eradicate this loathsome, brutish practice that goes against our culture and values, and ruins the country silently, once and for all. This Poson period is perhaps the most suitable time for it.

Some think it's a harmless rite of passage but the practice of hazing can be both degrading and deadly. Just this month, an Austin teenager was arrested for hazing a hockey teammate. Now, a Rochester company is at the cutting edge in efforts to get kids to wise up to the dangers of hazing. Rochester Police Officer Gretchen O'Neill says, "It's an initiation practice that can cause emotional or physical pain, anything degrading or embarrassing."Hazing... some might call it tradition, the law says it's abuse.In 2002, several hazing victims came forward to local authorities asking them what they could do to help put an end to hazing.Rochester Police Officer Gretchen O'Neill says"The kids need to feel safe in the school and the hazing that I have dealt with has been violent related hazing and we need to come up with ways of reducing violence in the schools.And that's just what Rochester Police Officer Gretchen O'Neill did.She teamed up with a local design and development company to create an educational movie called "Hazing The Painful Truth".Ted St. Mane and Mike Pruett of MLT Group worked on the project.MLT Group CEO Mike Pruett says, "We took it upon ourselves to do the funding of it and producing it."They even cast local authorities and students as their actors.MLT Group Director of Operations Ted St. Mane says, "It was a very organic acting experience, we brought these kids in, we based the story on improvisational acting and the kid's really rose to the challenge."The movie places the students in a difficult situation, should they follow their friends or should they walk away?Rochester Police Officer Gretchen O'Neill says, "I think there's a high need especially at the high school level to belong."MLT Group Director of Operations Ted St. Mane says, "Hazing is controversial, and as I learned more about it I thought this is a no brain-er type of issue."O'Neill says all Minnesota schools discipline students involved in a hazing.Something she's hoping won't have to happen much longer thanks to the pro-active steps being made to end hazing."Hazing the Painful Truth" has been picked up by every high school in Minnesota.Rochester Officer Gretchen O'Neill says the video will be shown to all student athletes before each sporting season.

Incidents of sexual hazing of young teens at a recent basketball camp at Lyon College were reportedly caught on tape and found by a parent of one of the students involved, according to Lt. Brenda Bittle with the Independence County Sheriff’s Office.
Bittle said several boys from the East Carter County R2 school district in Ellsinore, Mo. were attending the camp at Lyon College the week of June 10-13 when the incident reportedly happened.
According to reports filed in Missouri and Independence County, there were nine victims ranging in age from 13-14-years-old. The three suspects in the incident are said to be 17.
“They said the hazing happened during the lunch hour in the dorms and late at night after the counselors had all gone to bed,” Bittle said.
“The older students reportedly told the younger victims that they had to go through the hazing in order to get on the basketball team. They said it had been done for years and years and even the coaches went through it.
“Some of the incidents were caught on video on some of the students’ cell phones and a parent of one of the students later found the video,” Bittle said.
“Carter County Sheriff Greg Melton personally delivered a copy of the videos to me for our investigation, and the folks at Lyon College have been very cooperative.
“Our investigators have contacted all other schools and students involved in the sports camp and it seems no one else was involved in the hazing. It only involved the students from the Carter County school,” Bittle said.
Formal warrants against the three boys are expected to be completed for filing sometime early next week. The students blamed in the incident are then supposed to surrender themselves to the Independence County Sheriff’s Office to be served.
The three students will face charges in an Independence County juvenile court, according to Bittle.
